SUMMARY MING-SHOW WONG is a Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan . He is the founding Director of Institute of Materials Science and Engineering of the University, which he joined in 1997. The institute expanded to include an undergraduate and a Ph.D. program in 2000-1 and transformed into a full department. He served as the Dean of College of Science and Engineering in 2003-6. During the period he promoted and initiated several integrated education, research core facilities and research programs including the very successful programs on nanoscience and nanotechnology. His research interests are in functional, hard and superhard materials by various CVD & PVD methods, surface engineering, ion beam modification, nanotechnology, photocatalysis, and various material characterization techniques. He has pioneered the development of several novel materials and thin films with exceptional properties, including carbon nitride, superhard nitride, oxide, carbide and hybrid superlattices, nanostructured carbon-based and BCN materials, metal nanowires, and visible-light photocatalysts. He received his B.A. in Materials Science and Engineering from National Tsing Hwa University in Taiwan in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Metallurgy at Marquette University in 1987. After spending two years at Materials Research Center of Northwestern University as a post-doctoral researcher working on diamond and DLC films, he joined Basic Industrial Research Lab. (BIRL) of Northwestern University as a scientist and a principal investigator during the period of 1989-1997. He instrumentally established an Industrial Group Program to scale-up and to transfer the superhard coating technology for commercial applications. He has authored or co-authored over 100 refereed journal papers, over 110 conference presentations and holds 4 patents. He has organized or co-organized many technical meetings and workshops on nanotechnology, photocatalytic materials and hard/superhard coatings. He has been active in AVS, MRS and ASM International since his graduate school years (1982-87) and a loyal participant of ICMCTF since 1989. He served as an executive committee member of AVS Vacuum Metallurgy Division in1999-2000. He is the founding President of Taiwan Association for Coating and Thin Film Technology and served a two-year term in 1999-2001. He currently serves as a trustee of Society of Materials Science in Taiwan and as an Executive Committee member of Advanced Surface Engineering Division of American Vacuum Society.
